The USA demands that Ukraine concede Donbas: Kyiv refuses

According to ТСН: Representatives of the USA at negotiations in Berlin continue to insist that Ukraine agree to concessions regarding the unoccupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk areas in exchange for the possibility of peace talks with Russia.

According to a source from AFP, Kyiv refuses to comply with Washington's demands to withdraw troops from certain territories of Donbas, which still remain under Ukraine's control since the invasion in February 2022.

An official emphasized that Russian leader Vladimir Putin "wants territory", while the USA demands that Ukraine "withdraw" its units from these regions, which Kyiv is not ready to do.

"It is somewhat surprising that the Americans take the Russian position on this issue," the official added.

BILD also confirms that the American delegation in Berlin insists on concessions from Ukraine regarding Donbas. Representatives of Donald Trump — Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner again emphasize Ukraine’s refusal to control these territories. However, for President Volodymyr Zelensky, this issue remains a "red line".

Prospects for Dialogue

In Berlin, there are signals that some of Kyiv's proposals may form the basis for dialogue. German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul commented on Zelensky's statements about a possible willingness to abandon NATO aspirations.

"If these are Ukraine's proposals, then Russia can adopt this position. But we will continue to do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine can achieve the best negotiating position," he emphasized.

It should be noted that the BILD publication mentions that Ukraine has rejected a dangerous compromise proposed by the USA and Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky has refused to discuss the unilateral withdrawal of the Ukrainian army from the Donetsk region. Kyiv is open to various compromises; however, there are "red lines".

Despite this, there is a real chance for peace in Ukraine, which may be realized by Christmas. The German tabloid notes that the first signal of hope is the visit of special representatives of US President Donald Trump to Berlin.

The events in Berlin underscore the complexity of the negotiation process, and the positions of the parties still hinder movement towards a peaceful resolution. However, soft signals regarding possible compromises from Kyiv and Budapest keep open the opportunity for dialogue, which could form the basis for a new stage in relations and reduce tensions in the region.
