U.S. to Insure Ships in the Strait of Hormuz: Military Escorts for Oil Tankers.
United States Launches Vessel Insurance Program for the Strait of Hormuz
According to TSN.ua: The United States is rolling out a new initiative to insure vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, which will include military escorts for oil tankers. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the plan during a cabinet meeting attended by President Donald Trump. This program is designed to significantly enhance security for shipping operators in the Persian Gulf region, especially amid rising tensions in the area. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, making its safety a top priority for international markets.
“Your decisive actions, such as the maritime insurance program of the International Development Corporation, together with Central Command, will soon provide shipping operators in the Persian Gulf region with a level of security we have never seen before.”

Bessent further emphasized that “today we are beginning to see more and more movement to and from the Persian Gulf—more than yesterday, and this is just the beginning.” Based on these remarks, the secretary expressed confidence that maritime traffic through this vital waterway will only increase over time.
Meanwhile, Iran has strengthened its defenses around the strategically important Kharg Island, which may indicate the country’s readiness to respond to shifting regional dynamics. Bessent added: “I am confident that shipping will increase day by day even before we fully secure the strait.” These developments highlight the current challenges and U.S. efforts to ensure stability and safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
Significance of the Vessel Insurance Program
The proposed vessel insurance program represents a major step toward safeguarding maritime transport along one of the world’s most critical waterways, which holds strategic importance for global energy supplies. Given Iran’s enhanced military posture and growing threats to tankers, U.S. actions could have a profound impact on regional stability and the security of international shipping.
Moreover, the implementation of this program could stimulate economic activity in the Persian Gulf, potentially introducing new challenges in relations among the states involved.
