Ukraine to Block Unregistered Starlink Terminals: How to Register Your Device.
Ukraine Implements a 'Whitelist' for Starlink Terminals
According to TSN.ua: The Ukrainian government has mandated a new 'whitelist' system for Starlink satellite internet terminals. This policy will restrict service to only officially verified and registered devices, with all unverified terminals facing disconnection. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated this is the sole technical solution to counter potential threats, adding that the whitelist will ensure stable connectivity for Ukrainians, enhance security, and deny the enemy any technological advantages. This move comes as Starlink has been a critical communications tool for both civilians and the military since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
Simplified Registration Process for Users
Minister Fedorov also announced a simplified registration process for citizens and businesses. For civilians, registration will be a straightforward procedure handled through Administrative Service Centers (ASCs). Entrepreneurs can verify their terminals online via the 'Diia' government services portal. Military personnel are exempt from visiting ASCs, as they will use a secure channel through the DELTA system. These measures aim to establish control over Starlink usage in Ukraine and improve communication conditions for a nation at war.
“The implementation of the Starlink terminal whitelist reflects the Ukrainian government's efforts to strengthen information security and maintain stable communications during wartime.” - Mykhailo Fedorov
Controlling technologies that could be exploited for military purposes is a crucial step in preventing misuse and preserving a technological edge in the conflict. The streamlined registration process is also expected to facilitate broader, legitimate access to this vital technology for the population and businesses, which could positively impact the nation's overall communication resilience.
