Starmer to Visit Ukraine to Discuss Post-War Peacekeeping Mission with Zelensky.
Leader of the UK opposition Keir Starmer plans to visit Ukraine to discuss a peacekeeping mission after the war. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky after a meeting with allies at the Ramstein airbase in Germany.
According to Bloomberg, Starmer's visit to Kyiv is scheduled for the coming weeks. This will be Starmer's first visit to Ukraine since his appointment in July.
'This initiative was started by Emmanuel Macron. The British view it positively, but I will discuss it in detail with the Prime Minister at our meeting, which will take place,' Zelensky told reporters on Thursday evening. 'He will visit Ukraine; he has a visit to Ukraine, and we will talk.'
European leaders are discussing the possibility of sending troops for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine after a ceasefire is reached. This became relevant before the inauguration of Donald Trump, who promised to resolve the conflict through negotiations.
Zelensky announced Starmer's visit at a Time when Macron and Starmer were discussing the importance of supporting Ukraine and securing its position in 2025.
It is worth noting that the French initiative for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine has become one of the key issues for discussion in the EU. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested deploying peacekeepers on Ukrainian territory in case of a ceasefire and achieving peace.
European countries are negotiating the possibility of sending a military contingent to Ukraine, numbering up to 100,000 troops. The core of the contingent may consist of military personnel from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
YouGov research showed that 56% of Germans support the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine, but only 23% would like to see German soldiers in the contingent.
Zelensky emphasized that the deployment of contingents from partner countries could be an important step towards forcefully bringing Russia to peace, noting the support of the United Kingdom in this initiative.
