Storm Nils Strikes Southern France

According to TSN.ua: A powerful storm named Nils has hit southern France, causing widespread power outages, fatalities, and severe weather conditions. The storm's intense winds and heavy rains have left approximately 850,000 homes without electricity. The regions of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie were hardest hit, with 485,000 and 318,000 households respectively experiencing blackouts. Such severe weather events are becoming more frequent in Western Europe, testing national infrastructure.

Fatalities and Heightened Danger Levels

The storm has had tragic consequences, resulting in at least one fatality—a truck driver in the Landes department—and several injuries. Winds reached peak speeds of 162 km/h (100 mph) in Biscarrosse, creating significant hazards. In response, the Aude department was placed under a red-level weather alert, the highest possible, where between 15,000 and 17,000 households lost power.

Meanwhile, a red alert for avalanche risk was issued in Savoy. The regions of Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne remain under red flood warnings as the Garonne River's water level surged from 3.8 meters to 7.06 meters. Additionally, 32 other French departments are under an orange-level alert, underscoring the widespread severity of the situation and the urgent need for protective measures.

Storm Nils has served as a major test for France's emergency response systems.

The scale of the power disruptions and the human losses highlight the critical need for preparedness against extreme weather, which is increasingly common. Authorities are now working to restore electricity and ensure public safety, demonstrating the seriousness of the crisis and the ongoing challenges posed by a changing climate.
