Fatal Road Accident in Western Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: A 14-year-old girl was killed and her 9-year-old brother injured in a road accident near the village of Smerekiy in the Lviv region on February 24. The driver, a local prosecutor, was returning from work and was sober at the time of the collision. This incident has sparked renewed public debate about road safety and accountability for public officials in Ukraine.
On February 26, the Lychakiv District Court of Lviv ordered the detention of the prosecutor suspected of causing the fatal crash. The suspect, 25-year-old Ruslan Kulchytskyi, will be held for 60 days. The court also set bail at 266,240 Ukrainian hryvnias.
Investigation Under Scrutiny
Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, has taken personal charge of the investigation into the incident. The suspect has been formally charged under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Kulchytskyi now awaits further court proceedings as the investigation continues.
The tragedy has drawn significant attention to road safety and the responsibility of those in public office. The death of one child and the injury of another serve as a stark reminder of the critical need for all drivers to obey traffic laws.
The fact that the investigation is being overseen by the highest levels of the prosecutor's office underscores the gravity of the alleged offense and the potential consequences for the official involved.
