Swedish Coast Guard Seizes Sanctioned Russian Bulk Carrier in Special Operation.
Seizure of the Bulk Carrier 'Kaffa'
According to TSN.ua: In a joint operation, the Swedish Coast Guard and a national police task force intercepted the bulk carrier 'Kaffa', a vessel subject to Ukrainian sanctions. The incident occurred on March 6 at 15:50 south of Trelleborg. The grain-carrying ship was en route to Saint Petersburg. Special forces were deployed during the operation, using both a helicopter and a speedboat to board the vessel.
Vessel Condition and Potential Consequences
The 'Kaffa' is flying a false flag and is suspected of being unseaworthy. The ship recently arrived from Casablanca and switched from a Russian to a Guinean flag this summer. According to experts:
“The vessel has a flag that indicates it is a stateless person,” noted Mattias Lindholm.
Furthermore, it is important to note that:
- The vessel is on Ukraine's sanctions list;
- Its ownership structure is unclear;
- There is suspicion it lacks insurance.

The seizure has raised concerns about a potential link to Russia's 'shadow fleet', used to circumvent international sanctions. This action highlights intensified international efforts to monitor shipping potentially connected to restrictions imposed on Russia. The Swedish Coast Guard's operation underscores the critical importance of adhering to international safety standards and legal norms in maritime navigation. This incident is a clear example of heightened scrutiny over compliance with shipping regulations, particularly amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The detention of a ship suspected of involvement in illicit transport serves as a warning to other vessel owners about the necessity of observing sanctions and international rules. Such measures also confirm the international community's commitment to combating illegal shipping, which poses a threat to regional security.
