Afghan Taliban Burn Hundreds of Musical Instruments in Crackdown.
Taliban Destroy Hundreds of Musical Instruments in Afghanistan
According to TSN.ua: Authorities in Afghanistan's Parwan and Laghman provinces have reported the destruction of approximately 600 musical instruments, which were confiscated by the Taliban during raids. In these operations, around 500 instruments were burned in Parwan province, with over 100 more destroyed in Laghman province. This crackdown is part of the Taliban's broader campaign to enforce their strict interpretation of Islamic law, which views most forms of music as forbidden.
'In his region alone, about 500 units were burned,' stated government official Abdul Mojibi Hanafi.
The Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, have imposed a near-total ban on the arts, prohibiting both the production and listening to music. They have also detained dozens of people on accusations of creating or broadcasting songs. In recent months, the Taliban have warned hotel owners against allowing music at weddings and social gatherings and have removed fine arts faculties from the education system.
These actions underscore the Taliban's tightening control over cultural life in the country. The destruction of musical instruments signals a continuation of the group's harsh policies toward Afghan culture and arts. These measures have raised alarm within the international community, which is concerned about human rights violations and the suppression of cultural freedoms.
With the very existence of art and culture under threat, many Afghans are watching the situation with deep apprehension for the future of their traditions and means of self-expression.
