The Shadow of Pushkin in Odesa Has Disappeared: Utility Workers Painted Over the Art Object During Decolonization.
In the center of Odesa, utility workers painted over the shadow of Alexander Pushkin, but activists continue to demand the removal of all monuments related to the Russian poet. This is reported by the activists of the movement 'We Make You Nervous'.
The Shadow of Pushkin
Utility workers in Odesa painted over the famous 'Shadow of Pushkin' with gray paint at the intersection of Deribasivska and Rynok streets. After this, activists demand the dismantling of the poet's monument in the Bourse Square.
'Odesa utility workers helped the clouds gather in the sky. The shadow of Pushkin has disappeared and we will not see it anymore, just as we hope we will not see Pushkin in the near future at the Bourse. All the Moscow monuments belong in the landfill, in other words, in Moscow. At the same time, the Odesa city authorities are completely sabotaging the decolonization process and are devotedly protecting the 'Russian world',— claimed the activists.
'The Shadow of Pushkin' in Odesa
The idea of painting the shadow of Alexander Pushkin belongs to the writer Oleg Borushko and the Odesa local historian Oleg Huhary. The author of the painting is sculptor Alexander Knyazik. The presentation of the art object took place on September 26, 2013, and was dedicated to the opening of the annual literary festival 'Pushkin Autumn'.
Previously, the 'Reno House' was located at the painting site – a hotel where Pushkin himself stayed during his exile in 1823-1824.
During the debates about the removal of monuments dedicated to the poet Alexander Pushkin, the positions of activists and utility workers remain opposite. Activists emphasize the necessity of decolonization and the removal of all monuments related to the poet, while local utility workers aim to preserve historical objects.Read also
