Trump sends son-in-law Kushner for secret peace talks in Ukraine.
According to ТСН: While diplomats seek ways to exert influence, U.S. President Donald Trump decided to rely on his trusted family members. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and his former advisor, unexpectedly intervened again in foreign policy. He became one of the key figures in indirect negotiations for ending the war in Ukraine, drawing on his experience with complex agreements in the Middle East.
This was reported by the Financial Times.
Trump's 'problem solver'
Last Sunday in Geneva, Ukrainian officials were shocked by Jared Kushner's presence at the negotiation table – he was actively typing on his laptop. Sergey Kyslytsia noted that at first, it caused surprise, but later his participation was assessed positively. Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, took on the role of unofficial envoy for his father-in-law's 'impossible missions.'
During Trump's first term, he worked on normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries, and recently facilitated an agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Now his task is to stop the fighting in Ukraine.
Trump does not hide his trust in his relative.
'We always call Jared when we want to close a deal. Sometimes we need this brain,' Trump said in October.
'Gaza model' and connections with Russians
According to the publication, Trump's team is trying to implement in Ukraine an approach that worked in Gaza. There, a 20-point plan led to a fragile ceasefire and the release of hostages. Now Kushner, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff, is trying to develop a similar scenario for Kyiv and Moscow.
However, the first version of this document raised concerns among Ukraine's European allies, who fear that the text was too close to Russia's demands, which could effectively mean capitulation.
There are also worries that Kushner and Witkoff discussed the situation with Russian officials, including Kirill Dmitriev – head of the Russian Sovereign Fund. Kushner and Dmitriev have known each other since 2019.
Visit to the Kremlin
One key stage of these efforts may be a personal meeting of the negotiators with the Russian president. Donald Trump hinted that as early as next week, his representatives might head to Moscow for finalizing the peace plan.
'Steve Witkoff is going, possibly with Jared. I’m not sure about Jared’s trip, but he is involved in the process, he’s a smart guy, and they will meet with President Putin,' Trump said.
Experts believe this approach illustrates Trump's signature style: 'politics through personalities.' Instead of formal institutions and agreed strategies, the fate of geopolitics is determined in a limited circle of trusted individuals and relatives.
Recall that a scheduled meeting with the Ukrainian delegation to discuss the peace plan was announced in the U.S. According to Reuters, the U.S. president's son-in-law Jared Kushner will be present at the meeting.
The use of such personalities as Kushner indicates an unusual approach by Trump to foreign policy, which emphasizes personal connections. This may influence the further development of the situation in Ukraine and relations with Russia, highlighting the still powerful impact of family ties on global politics. The developments are worth watching, as the final outcome of the negotiations could have far-reaching consequences.Read also
