U.S.-Iran Peace Negotiations Take Shape

According to TSN.ua: Despite ongoing hostilities expected to persist for several more weeks, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has begun laying the groundwork for potential peace negotiations with Iran. Key figures in these discussions include Trump envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. Backchannel communications between the U.S. and Iran are being facilitated through intermediaries from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom.

Conditions and Demands

Washington has presented Tehran with a six-point framework of commitments, which includes:

  • a five-year suspension of Iran’s missile program;
  • a complete halt to uranium enrichment;
  • decommissioning of reactors at the Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow nuclear facilities;
  • strict external monitoring protocols for the production and use of centrifuges;
  • regional arms control agreements limiting Iran’s missile inventory to no more than 1,000 units;
  • a ban on funding militant groups such as Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthis, and Hamas in Gaza.

Iran has previously rejected these terms, though it has signaled openness to dialogue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that de-escalation would require the U.S. and Israel to halt attacks on Iran. Tehran is also demanding a ceasefire and reparations, which could become a central sticking point in future talks. Qatar is expected to serve as a mediator in these high-stakes discussions.

These potential negotiations mark a significant opportunity to reduce regional tensions amid an active conflict. The success of any peace process will depend on trust-building among all parties, including the mediators. Notably, earlier attempts at dialogue have often been derailed by mutual distrust and external interference, meaning that a breakthrough here could reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
