Trump supported new sanctions against Russia: named his key condition.
According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump expressed support for the bill concerning sanctions against Russia, developed by American legislators. However, Trump has one important condition.
He mentioned this during an interview with Fox News.
When asked by a journalist whether he supports the bill on sanctions against Russia, Trump said:
‘I think there are 84 or 85 senators who want... Yes (I support it – ed.), but only if it is subordinated to me. And you know, I support it.’
The host clarified whether Trump supports the bill, to which the president replied:
‘I hope we do not have to implement it. We already have serious sanctions against Russia.’
Trump also noted that the Russian economy is in very bad shape. However, he added that from an economic standpoint, Russia is a larger and more powerful country compared to Ukraine.
US sanctions bill against Russia: what is known
It is worth noting that recently Senator Lindsey Graham reported that Trump supported his bipartisan sanctions bill against the Russian Federation. This document provides for punishment for countries that buy cheap Russian oil. It also gives the US president the opportunity to influence China, India, and Brazil to reduce funding for the Kremlin's military actions against the backdrop of aggression against Ukraine. Graham hopes for broad support in the Senate and predicts voting as early as next week.
This bill is part of US efforts to increase pressure on Russia in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to experts, successful adoption of sanctions could significantly impact the international economy and reduce the Kremlin's ability to finance military actions. President Trump's support indicates limited but important unity on foreign policy issues that are critical for regional security.
