US Secretary of State Marco Rubio skips key NATO meeting: what it means for Ukraine

According to ТСН: An unexpected situation is arising in diplomatic circles that may call European partners and Kyiv to action. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is planning to skip an important meeting of NATO foreign ministers that will take place in Brussels.

The absence of the chief American diplomat at such an important event is rare, especially in the context of resolving the fate of the peace plan for Ukraine and Alliance unity.

Who will replace Rubio and the reasons for the replacement

Washington will be represented by his deputy Christopher Lando. The official reasons for this decision have not yet been announced, but Rubio's plans may change at the last minute. Nevertheless, the replacement itself is unprecedented.

Usually, US secretaries of state do not miss such events, as the country is the de facto leader of the Alliance. The last time such a situation occurred was in 2017 when the meeting was postponed to accommodate Rex Tillerson's schedule.

Particular attention should be paid to the deputy who will go to Brussels. Christopher Lando, who will represent the US, has previously expressed skepticism about NATO. In June, he published (and later deleted) a post on the social network X, where he questioned the necessity of NATO's existence. This may complicate communication with European allies, who already have their concerns regarding defense funding due to Donald Trump's rhetoric.

Concerns about the peace plan and State Department's reaction

Rubio's absence comes at an important moment for Ukraine. Kyiv and Washington are trying to align their positions regarding President Trump's controversial ceasefire plan. European diplomats are expressing concern that they are being excluded from negotiations, and worries about imposing unfavorable terms on Ukraine have only increased following the leak of the '28-point plan' draft. The situation is complicated by internal political upheavals in Ukraine, particularly the resignation of Andrii Yermak.

The US State Department declined to comment on Rubio's absence but noted that the Alliance is 'fully restored' during the Trump administration. A State Department spokesperson emphasized the effectiveness of Washington's modern foreign policy.

"The historical foreign policy achievements of this administration in just 10 months speak for themselves," said the State Department representative.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also commented on the US proposal regarding a peace agreement, which essentially prohibits Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance, emphasizing that Russia is not a NATO member and has no veto power over its expansion or Ukraine's accession.

The situation regarding Rubio's absence from the NATO foreign ministers' meeting signals increasing tension in transatlantic relations. Moreover, it underscores the importance of coordinating positions between the US and its partners as issues of Ukraine's security and its European future become ever more pressing. Washington's efforts to align strategy with European allies become critically important in light of ongoing military actions and political dynamics in the region.
