Trudeau spoke about contacts with Putin and shared hopes for the end of the war in Ukraine.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to conduct a phone call with Vladimir Putin, stating that to end the war, interaction with the Russian president is necessary.
Scholz's call prompted a reaction from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who in a video address stated that Russia deserves isolation, and the phone conversation is 'what Putin has long yearned for.'
According to Bloomberg, some European officials also disagree with Scholz's decision, viewing it as a manifestation of weakness that will have little impact on Putin.
However, commenting on Scholz's call, Trudeau emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with Putin. 'We all understand how important it is to stop the violence in Ukraine and conflicts in the world,' Trudeau said in Peru at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. 'This requires a certain level of interaction with our partners, with whom we often disagree.'
Trudeau added that Canada and its allies continue to work closely with Zelensky. 'It's good that such conversations are taking place, but the level of trust in Vladimir Putin is probably at its lowest point right now,' he remarked.
According to him, Canada remains committed to Ukraine's victory and seeks the quickest resolution to the conflict. 'Perhaps in the coming months, opportunities will arise for this,' he added, without providing details.
The Prime Minister also stressed the critical importance of support from the United States: 'Let's be frank: no allies in the world can replace the full support of Ukraine from the United States.'
