Tusk commented on rumors about the deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine.
Polish President Donald Tusk denied rumors about the possible deployment of a European peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement with Russia.
He made the statement on December 12 during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Warsaw, Politico reports.
'I want to put an end to talks about the presence of troops from this or that country in Ukraine after a possible peace agreement or ceasefire,' Tusk said at a joint press conference with Macron.
According to Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, the two countries discussed the possibility of sending a peacekeeping contingent consisting of 40,000 troops from other countries.
According to a European diplomat and a French official, Macron arrived in Warsaw specifically to discuss this idea. The visit was cut short due to the need to appoint a new Prime Minister of France.
Macron confirmed that talks with Tusk were focused on Ukraine and the situation 'after' the war, but did not discuss the issue of peacekeeping forces and did not answer questions from the press.
'The Trump administration demonstrated a willingness to change the trajectory of the conflict, and we must work with Ukraine and Europe, taking into account European and Ukrainian interests,' Macron emphasized.
The visit of the French president took place less than a week after he hosted re-elected U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris ahead of the official reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Trump expressed a desire for an 'immediate ceasefire' in Ukraine.
Tusk hinted that Poland has not yet determined its position on this proposal: 'We discussed this, and decisions regarding any actions will be made in Warsaw, only in Warsaw. And at the moment, nothing like this is planned.'
