Ancient Burial Site Discovered in Cumbria

According to TSN.ua: Archaeologists have discovered Britain's oldest known human burial in Cumbria, northern England, dating back approximately 11,000 years. The remains belong to a young girl, aged between 2.5 and 3.5 years, who was interred in Heaning Wood Bone Cave. This find provides a crucial new perspective on Britain's Mesolithic period, a time following the last Ice Age when hunter-gatherer societies began to repopulate the land.

Dated to between 9290 and 8925 BCE, this is now the third oldest Mesolithic burial found in northwestern Europe. It surpasses the previous record-holder, a roughly 10,000-year-old burial from Kent's Bank Cave. The child has been named 'Ossi Lass'. Her burial is part of a complex, multi-layered history at Heaning Wood Bone Cave, where evidence of at least eight individuals from three distinct eras has been found:

  • Around 11,000 years ago (Early Mesolithic)
  • Approximately 5,500 years ago (Early Neolithic)
  • Around 4,000 years ago (Early Bronze Age)

The Significance of the Find

Excavations at Heaning Wood Bone Cave, which began in 2016, have already revealed clear signs of a deliberate burial. This discovery reshapes our understanding of Britain's deep history, highlighting the region's importance in early human evolution and cultural practices. Ongoing research may yield fresh insights into the lives and customs of our ancient ancestors.

The find is significant not only for archaeology but also for understanding the social structures and rituals of Mesolithic communities. Analysis of the remains and any associated artifacts could help scientists better comprehend how these early people interacted with their environment and with each other. Continued excavation at this site holds the potential to unlock new horizons in the study of Britain's ancient past and the formation of its cultural heritage.
