According to TSN.ua: A rare bird, the hazel grouse, has been documented within the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve. This species, listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species, is scientifically known as Tetrastes bonasia and belongs to the grouse family. The sighting is particularly notable as it occurred in the area most heavily affected by the 1986 nuclear disaster.

Characteristics of the Hazel Grouse

The hazel grouse is a small bird, measuring between 35 and 37 centimeters in length and weighing from 330 to 580 grams. These birds build their nests on the ground, typically under the shelter of bushes or fallen trees, which provides some protection for their young. A clutch usually contains 6 to 8 eggs, which the female incubates for approximately three weeks. Remarkably, ornithologists note that the chicks are capable of flight and can roost in trees just a few weeks after hatching.

This observation serves as a significant confirmation of biodiversity preservation within the exclusion zone, which has become a refuge for numerous species of flora and fauna. The reserve is also anticipating new arrivals, with pregnant roe deer expected to give birth in May or June.
