Finland on Peace with Russia: Why Negotiations Have Hit a Stalemate.
According to ТСН: While the global community awaits the continuation of peace talks and the upcoming meeting of the US special envoy with Vladimir Putin, European diplomats express caution regarding the situation. In Helsinki, they believe that the modern path to peace appears extremely complicated due to the intransigence of the aggressor.
No Concessions from Moscow
Finland's Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen expressed skepticism about the progress of the peace plan, emphasizing that Russia's behavior is the main obstacle. She noted that the Kremlin's demands are not diminishing but are only becoming more stringent.
“This looks difficult. We have not seen any concessions from Russia. They have shown no willingness to agree to a ceasefire. Since March, Ukraine has been ready for a full or partial ceasefire, while Russia has not,”
Valtonen noted. The diplomat also pointed out the possibility of pressure on Kyiv. If the US decides that the war needs to be ended at any cost, this could lead to a situation where Ukraine would have to accept unfavorable terms.
A Threat to the World Order
Valtonen expressed concern over the possibility of the US recognizing Crimea and other occupied territories as part of Russia. She warned that such a step would be a catastrophic signal for the global community.
“This would be a significant step towards a world where people would start thinking: 'Hey, we have a border dispute here — what if we just shift the markers a bit and ask someone to recognize the new borders?’”
Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton criticized the proposed peace plan for Ukraine, believing that new diplomatic initiatives would not help in any way but would only serve to benefit Putin.
This situation indicates that peace initiatives prove insufficient for resolving the conflict. In light of Moscow's hardline stance, Western countries continue to seek ways to support Ukraine. Whether international actions can change the course of events will be seen in time.
