Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov spoke about the discovery:
'Some kind of pit has formed in the 'Strilka' square. We will now begin research, involving local historians and researchers to analyze this situation, as there are underground structures here.', Terekhov noted.
According to the mayor, if the underground tunnels prove to be of historical value for Kharkiv, a project will be developed to showcase them to the public. The timeline for restoration cannot currently be determined, as it depends on historical data. Specialists will conduct research in archives and investigate individual facts to establish the origin of the tunnels.
There are several theories regarding the origin of these underground spaces: an old water supply system, a fish market, or a market that existed before the 20th century.
'At the moment, it is impossible to say what caused the collapse. We recently had a storm, as well as constant shelling and soil shifts.', the Kharkiv mayor added.
In revealing the story of the underground tunnels in the center of Kharkiv, the mayor hopes to find answers to questions regarding the origin and value of these mysterious underground spaces for the city.
