Kharkiv to Open New Underground Schools and a Kindergarten

According to Novyny.live: In a significant move to safeguard education, the city of Kharkiv plans to open two new underground schools and the country's first underground kindergarten in the spring of 2024. This initiative is a direct response to the security challenges the city has faced, aiming to create secure learning environments for children. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has been heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict.

On January 28, 2024, Olha Demenko, head of the Kharkiv City Council's education department, announced the plans. She stated that this expansion will ensure each of the city's administrative districts has at least one, and in some cases two, underground schools.

"This spring we will open two more underground schools, and then we will clearly see that every administrative district has one or even two underground schools," she noted.

Pioneering Underground Kindergarten Project

Alongside the schools, Kharkiv has also developed a pioneering project for an underground kindergarten.

"Kharkiv has created the first project for an underground kindergarten," added Olha Demenko.
This project is part of a broader municipal strategy to expand safe educational spaces, a priority strongly supported by Mayor Ihor Terekhov to ensure reliable and comfortable conditions for children's learning and development.

Furthermore, Kharkiv has submitted an application to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for a competition to fund the creation of this first-of-its-kind underground kindergarten. This step is crucial for maintaining educational continuity when children's safety is at risk. The opening of these new subterranean facilities represents a major advancement in the city's infrastructure and a commitment to improving learning conditions under extraordinary circumstances.

This overall initiative underscores the local government's determination to protect children's education amidst instability. The launch of underground schools and kindergartens could serve as a vital model for adapting educational systems to the severe challenges posed by warfare. Developing infrastructure in this way is also intended to positively impact children's psychological well-being and their capacity to learn in a difficult environment.
