Classrooms in Kyiv Schools Drop to 10°C Amid Heating Crisis.
Deep Freeze Grips Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: A severe cold spell is holding Kyiv in its grip on February 20th. Overnight lows are expected to plunge to between -10°C and -12°C, with daytime temperatures remaining well below freezing at -2°C to -4°C. In the wider Kyiv region, the chill will be even more intense, with nighttime readings from -10°C to -15°C and daytime highs between -1°C and -6°C.
This bitter cold has directly impacted the capital's educational institutions. Classroom temperatures in Kyiv's schools have fallen to as low as +10°C, creating difficult conditions for students and teachers. The Dniprovskyi district alone has 54 communal secondary schools. Their current operational status is as follows:
- 40 institutions are conducting in-person classes,
- 5 are using a hybrid model,
- 9 have switched to remote learning.
The heating situation in schools is a major concern, with damage to the heating mains from the city's CHP-4 thermal power plant identified as the primary cause of the temperature drop. Such infrastructure failures during winter highlight the vulnerability of public services to extreme weather. The ongoing war has placed additional strain on Ukraine's energy and utility networks.
The current situation with low temperatures in Kyiv and heating problems in educational institutions underscores the critical importance of reliable infrastructure during the winter months.
Faced with this extreme weather, schools are confronting challenges that threaten both educational quality and student well-being. Authorities are being urged to take immediate action to repair the heating systems and restore a safe, comfortable learning environment.
