Understanding the Day of the Crimean Tatar Flag
This annual observance, established in 2010, falls on June 26. The national flag of the Crimean Tatars features a light blue field with a golden tamga emblem. It was officially adopted 35 years ago during the Second Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar People. Over time, the flag has evolved into a powerful symbol of the Crimean Tatars’ struggle for rights and identity.
Refat Chubarov stated: 'There is no doubt that Crimea will be liberated. And over that Crimea, in every corner of the peninsula, the state flag of Ukraine and the Crimean Tatar national flag will always fly side by side.'
Andriy Sybiha emphasized that 'the blue banner with the golden tamga has become a symbol of resistance to Russian occupation, a fight for justice, and faith in Crimea’s return.'
The celebration also featured children reciting poetry, highlighting the cultural heritage and enduring traditions of the Crimean Tatar people. It is worth noting that Russia continues to unlawfully detain approximately 500 residents of temporarily occupied Crimea, including at least 165 individuals from the Crimean Tatar community. This reality underscores the importance of events like this in preserving national identity and keeping alive the memory of the hardships faced by the Crimean Tatar people.
Commemorating the Day of the Crimean Tatar Flag plays a vital role in maintaining the national identity of Crimean Tatars, who continue to confront challenges stemming from the occupation of Crimea. These flag-raising ceremonies not only symbolize unity but also serve as a reminder of historical struggles and ongoing issues. Support for the rights of the Crimean Tatar people remains a key component of Ukrainian policy and international diplomacy, as their status and cultural freedoms remain under threat.
