A Lost Rubens Painting Found in Paris: Masterpiece to be Auctioned.
According to Korrespondent.net: An astonishing discovery has taken place in Paris: a painting 'Christ on the Cross', created by Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens in 1613, has been found in a private house. The work was considered lost for several centuries, as reported by ArtNews.
Discovery and Condition of the Painting
French auctioneer Jean-Pierre Ozen discovered the painting while preparing for the sale of a mansion in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. He emphasized that this is an 'extraordinarily rare and incredible discovery', as the work was created at the peak of the artist's mastery. The canvas is in excellent condition.
Authentication Confirmation
The authenticity of the masterpiece was confirmed by German art historian Nils Büttner, who is the head of the Rubenshuis in Antwerp. The originality of the painting was also established using X-ray tomography and pigment analysis.
History of the Painting
Unlike most of Rubens' works, which were created for the Catholic Church, 'Christ on the Cross' was likely painted for a private client. The owners of the mansion mistakenly believed that it belonged to the French artist of the 19th century, William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
This autumn, this unique painting is set to be auctioned.
It should be noted that earlier in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, a visitor accidentally damaged a portrait of a 17th-century Tuscan prince while trying to take an impressive selfie.
