Ukrainians' passports will no longer have entries in Russian: what will change.
According to inkorr.com: The Verkhovna Rada adopted resolution No. 13369, which makes changes to the rules for issuing passports of the 1994 model. Now all entries in the documents will be made exclusively in the state language, without duplication in Russian, reports 'Glavcom'.
Changes according to the law
The explanatory note states that the changes implement the requirements of the law 'On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language'. The authors of the resolution emphasize the importance of bringing legislation in line with this law, which aims to support the functioning of the Ukrainian language and strengthen national identity.
'In the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, the state language has become one of the main symbols of unity, resilience, and our people's struggle for victory, independence, and a decent future. Bringing legislation in line with the Law of Ukraine 'On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language' is an important step towards ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language and strengthening national identity.'
The Ukrainian labor market
According to the recruitment portal Work.ua, the Ukrainian labor market has effectively switched to the Ukrainian language. In October 2022, 84% of job vacancies were issued in Ukrainian, and by October 2023 this share increased to 95%. In September 2024, the share of Ukrainian language offers reached 97%, while only 1.5% of vacancies were drawn up in Russian.
Thus, Ukraine is making changes to the passport issuance rules, prohibiting the duplication of documents in Russian, and emphasizes the importance of the Ukrainian language for national identity and the symbolism of unity in the context of the war with Russia. The situation in the labor market indicates the growing popularity of the Ukrainian language in recent years.
