Rare Black Leopard Cub in Kyiv Region Zoo: When Visitors Can See Her.
Birth of a Rare Amur Leopard Cub
According to TSN.ua: A rare Amur leopard cub with an unusual black coat was born in August 2025 at a zoo in the Kyiv region. This is a remarkable event, as only about a hundred of these animals remain in the wild. Named Hera, the cub is the offspring of Far Eastern leopards Salma and Hercules.
Weighing 15 kilograms, Hera is in stable condition. The zoo expects visitors will be able to see this rare predator in April 2026. Zoo representative Mykhailo Pinchuk noted that the team had spent years trying to breed this pair, highlighting how significant Hera’s birth is for the species’ conservation.
Why Hera’s Birth Matters
Events like the birth of a cub allow zoos to help preserve rare animal species and raise public awareness about their lives and the threats they face. Hera has become a symbol of hope for Amur leopards both in captivity and in the wild.
Hera’s birth holds special importance not just for the zoo, but for the overall conservation of Amur leopards. It underscores the value of efforts to protect rare species, as each new generation helps zoos maintain genetic diversity and improve the animals’ chances of survival in the wild. With Amur leopard populations declining, such initiatives can play a key role in preserving this species for future generations.
