Hungary Blocks EU Aid to Ukraine, Linking Veto to Oil Pipeline Dispute.
Supply Transit to Ukraine Halted
According to TSN.ua: Hungary has suspended the transit of supplies destined for Ukraine until the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline resumes operations. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced his veto of a 90-billion-euro European support package for Ukraine, explicitly tying this decision to the pipeline's restoration. In an open letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Orbán stated that Hungary is unwilling to provide financial assistance to Ukraine. This move comes as the EU seeks to maintain a unified front in supporting Kyiv against Russian aggression.
“We will not give Ukrainians the money they are successfully demanding from other EU countries, we will not pay, and we will not let Ukraine into the EU.”
Viktor Orbán
Orbán further argued that Ukraine's demands should not be accepted hypocritically, even if they involve threats of more severe consequences. 'Hungary links its veto on this decision to the halt of the Druzhba pipeline,' he added, noting he possesses political and financial tools to influence the situation.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also commented, alleging that the so-called 'Brussels-Berlin-Kyiv axis' aims to drive gasoline prices to 1,000 forints. This statement highlights the economic tensions Hungarian politicians perceive within the context of European policy.
Implications for Relations with the European Union
The dispute over supply transit to Ukraine is a significant element in the broader, often strained, relationship between Hungary and the European Union. Orbán's veto on financial aid underscores the deep divisions within the EU, which could have serious repercussions for political and economic stability in the region. Furthermore, the Hungarian Prime Minister's stance may impact European energy security negotiations, as the Druzhba pipeline plays a critical role in transporting Russian oil to parts of Europe.
