Hungary Urges EU to Lift Ban on Russian Oil and Gas, Raising Stakes in Energy Standoff.
Hungary's Appeal to the European Union
According to TSN.ua: Hungary has called on the European Union to revoke its prohibition on importing Russian oil and gas, citing supply disruptions and soaring energy prices. The statement was made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who warned that Brussels's continued sanctions could inflict severe damage on European citizens and the continent's economy. This move highlights the ongoing internal divisions within the EU over how to manage energy security while maintaining pressure on Russia.
Deadline Issued Over 'Druzhba' Oil Pipeline
Budapest has also presented Ukraine with a three-day ultimatum regarding the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline, a critical conduit for its energy supplies, according to Gábor Czepek. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has formally requested the European Commission to abolish sanctions on Russian energy carriers, stating that
“across the whole of Europe, we must review and suspend all sanctions imposed on Russian energy carriers” - Viktor Orbán
Should its demands not be met, Viktor Orbán cautioned that Budapest would halt the transit of vital supplies to Kyiv until operations on the 'Druzhba' pipeline are restored. These actions underscore the escalating tensions between Hungary and Ukraine and demonstrate how energy issues are influencing European Union policy. The Druzhba pipeline has long been a major artery for Russian oil into Central Europe, making its operation a matter of national interest for Hungary.
Hungary's push to lift sanctions on Russian energy underscores the complex energy predicament facing Europe, which has been sharply exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. Budapest is attempting to balance its economic interests with its political commitments to the EU. This issue has the potential to impact the bloc's collective policy towards Russia and its energy security strategy, as member states possess varying degrees of dependency on Russian resources.
