Hungary Leaked EU Deliberations to Moscow and Blocked €90 Billion in Aid for Ukraine.
Hungary 'Holds Ukraine Hostage' in the EU – Latest Developments
According to TSN.ua: Under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Hungary's government has been passing sensitive information from European Union discussions to Russia. This intelligence sharing reportedly occurred through phone calls made by Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Szijjártó has made 16 official trips to Moscow, with the most recent taking place on March 4, 2023.
In addition to these leaks, Budapest has also prevented the release of €90 billion in financial support for Ukraine. Hungary's Foreign Ministry claims that Ukraine is attempting to impose a “total energy blockade” on the country. In response, Szijjártó stated that the situation has crossed all acceptable boundaries. One unnamed official remarked that “for years, at every EU meeting, Moscow was effectively sitting at the table.”
These actions by Hungary are raising alarms across Europe, as blocking funds for Ukraine could worsen the country's position amid the ongoing war. This behavior also strains Hungary's relationships within the EU and NATO.
Long-Term Consequences
Given the current circumstances, it is critical to recognize that the strained ties between Hungary and Ukraine—as well as between Hungary and the European Union—could have lasting effects on regional security and stability. Withholding financial aid from a country at war not only risks deepening the humanitarian crisis but may also escalate international tensions.
Hungary's stance is expected to be a key topic at upcoming EU summits, where leaders will discuss how to continue supporting Ukraine and maintaining stability in the region.
