Ukraine Unveils 850 km Ballistic Missile; Russia Claims It Shot Down an Unidentified Target.
Missile Interception Announced
According to Espreso.tv: Moscow has declared that it intercepted a 'long-range operational-tactical missile' within the past 24 hours. Russia's Defense Ministry also reported detecting 7 guided bombs and 602 drones. However, Ukrainian officials have not publicly confirmed the use of any ballistic missiles in this incident.
FP-9 Ballistic Missile Testing Revealed
In a related development, the Ukrainian company Fire Point has announced plans to test its FP-9 ballistic missile. This weapon can strike targets up to 850 kilometers away, a capability that could significantly alter the regional power balance. On May 2, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that accelerating the development of ballistic missiles is a top priority for the country's missile program.
According to Bloomberg, 'the Defense Ministry did not identify the weapon and provided no further details.'
If the use of ballistic missiles is confirmed, it 'would mark a new step in Kyiv's efforts to expand its domestic long-range strike capabilities.' Furthermore, 'the high speed and trajectory of a ballistic missile reduce warning time and complicate interception by air defenses,' highlighting why Ukraine is investing heavily in this technology.
This situation underscores the ongoing escalation of military technology in the region and potential shifts in the strategies of both parties to the conflict. The development of ballistic missiles like the FP-9 could provide Ukraine with additional tools to defend its interests and strengthen its overall defense posture. It also signals the country's continued investment in advancing its military capabilities, which may have broader implications for European security.
