Zelenskyy Calls Strikes on Three Russian Oil Sites 'Long-Range Sanctions'.
Attacks Target Russia's Oil Refining Sector
According to UATV: Ukraine is intensifying its campaign to dismantle Russia's oil and refining infrastructure. On June 25, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed strikes on three facilities inside Russian territory, including the Poltavskaya oil depot in Krasnodar Krai, located roughly 300 kilometers from the front line. This operation marks a significant escalation in Ukraine's strategy to undermine Russia's war machine by hitting key energy assets deep within its borders.
Additional strikes targeted two refineries in Ufa—Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim and Bashneft-Novoyl—which sit about 1,500 kilometers from the combat zone. According to the president, operations at the Moscow Refinery may be suspended for at least six months following drone attacks in June. These coordinated actions aim to cripple Russia's fuel supply chain and reduce its capacity to sustain military operations.
“Our long-range operations are consistent, precise responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its strikes on Ukrainian cities.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy outlined the intent behind these attacks, stating, “We are executing our plan of long-range sanctions. Russians should think about real diplomacy, rather than trying to deceive anyone again or buy time. The war must end.” Ukrainian authorities continue to actively target Russia's oil-related infrastructure as part of their broader effort to counter aggression and pressure Moscow into negotiations.
Conflict Escalation
These strikes signal an escalation in the conflict and Ukraine's determination to shrink Russia's resource base for waging war. Destroying critical oil refining facilities could severely impact Russia's ability to sustain its military efforts, particularly amid a prolonged confrontation. By hitting these strategic assets, Kyiv aims to both defend its territory and demonstrate resolve against the aggressor.
In essence, Ukraine is not only protecting its own land but also showing unwavering commitment to weakening Russia's logistical and economic support for the invasion.
