Ukraine–Saudi Arabia Agreement on Defense Cooperation
According to UATV: On March 26, 2023, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia formalized a defense cooperation agreement that establishes a framework for future contracts, technology sharing, and investments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an unannounced visit to Jeddah, where he held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. This pact marks a significant step in deepening bilateral defense ties between the two nations.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: 'We are ready to share our expertise and systems with Saudi Arabia and work together to strengthen the protection of lives.'
Under this agreement, Ukraine plans to offer various forms of support and develop long-term systems aimed at improving defenses against aerial threats. This highlights the growing importance of defense collaboration in addressing modern security challenges.
Military Experts and Defense Industry Growth
Notably, over 200 Ukrainian military specialists have already deployed to Middle Eastern countries, including Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. According to Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, the country is projected to produce more than 8 million FPV drones annually by 2026. This underscores Ukraine’s ambition to expand its defense industrial base and engage international partners in joint ventures within this sector.
The newly signed accord between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia could significantly reshape the regional geopolitical landscape by bolstering the defensive capabilities of both nations. The involvement of Ukrainian military experts and the advancement of defense manufacturing reflect Ukraine’s drive for more robust international security cooperation—especially relevant amid current threats. This also opens up potential investment opportunities in Ukraine’s defense sector, a critical step toward modernization and greater self-reliance.
