Ukraine's Antarctic Base 'Akademik Vernadsky' Celebrates Three Decades of Research.
Three Decades of Ukrainian Antarctic Presence
According to UATV: Ukraine has marked the 30th anniversary of its Antarctic research station, 'Akademik Vernadsky', with a photo exhibition and a gathering of expedition veterans in Kyiv. This facility, Ukraine's sole polar base, was acquired on February 6, 1996, when the nation purchased Britain's 'Faraday' station for the symbolic sum of one pound sterling. This acquisition was a pivotal moment, securing Ukraine's foothold for scientific exploration on the southernmost continent and establishing its role in global climate research.
Photo Exhibition and Commemorative Stamp
The celebrations featured the unveiling of a photo exhibition titled 'Ukraine in Antarctica: Research and Resilience'. The collection showcases 30 images capturing the work and life of Ukrainian scientists on the icy continent. The exhibition will remain open to the public until March 1, 2026, offering a long-term glimpse into the station's unique operations.
A new postage stamp was also issued to commemorate '30 Years of the Akademik Vernadsky Station', with a print run of 630,000 copies. The stamp was designed by Oksana Shuklinova. The exhibition photos were provided by Anna Soina, D. Kajetan, Oksana Savenko, and Serhiy Glotov.
Prominent experts addressed the event. Rob Perry highlighted the global significance of the work, noting,
"Antarctic research shares a common goal—developing strategies for adapting to climate change."Hennadii Milinevskyi recounted the story of how Ukraine secured the 'Faraday' station, emphasizing its importance for the nation's scientific development.
The 30th anniversary underscores the critical role of Antarctic science in understanding global climate shifts and shaping environmental policy. Maintaining and developing Ukraine's presence there demonstrates the country's ongoing commitment to international scientific cooperation. The new stamp and photo exhibition help bring the vital, remote work of polar researchers to a broader public audience.
