Ukraine Urges IAEA to Suspend Russia's Council Membership Over Nuclear Plant Power Grid Attacks.
Ukraine's Appeal to the IAEA
According to UATV: At an emergency meeting on January 30, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, called for Russia's membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors to be suspended. This demand follows recent Russian strikes on electrical substations that supply power to Ukraine's nuclear power plants. The ongoing war has created unprecedented risks to nuclear safety in Europe, making the security of these facilities a global concern.
Shmyhal stated that Moscow has systematically and deliberately targeted the substations providing external electricity to Ukraine's nuclear stations. He emphasized that these actions directly threaten nuclear safety within the country. Since the invasion began, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant alone has recorded 12 complete blackouts, highlighting the severity of the situation.
"Real accountability must be established for acts of aggression that undermine nuclear safety," said Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Call for an International Response
This situation underscores the urgent need for a coordinated international response to threats against nuclear security, particularly within the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Attacks on energy infrastructure linked to nuclear facilities could have catastrophic consequences not only for Ukraine but for neighboring nations as well.
Consequently, Ukraine is seeking to mobilize the international community to take decisive action to ensure regional safety and prevent further aggressive acts by Russia.
