A Flock of 55 Pink Pelicans Spotted for the First Time in Ukraine.
Pink Pelicans Discovered in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: In a significant first for Ukrainian ornithology, a flock of 55 pink pelicans was recorded in the country in 2026. The group was discovered by Doctor of Biological Sciences Ivan Rusev in the southern part of the Odesa region, near the Sasyk Lagoon. This sighting is a major event for bird scientists and conservationists, as the pink pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) is listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species. The species is more commonly associated with regions of southeastern Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The initial sighting was made by the acting director of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, Iryna Vykhrystiuk, who highlighted the discovery's importance. Ivan Rusev later confirmed the pelicans' presence while surveying the upper part of the Sasyk Lagoon, an area with protected status as part of the Danube Biosphere Reserve of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. This reserve, established on February 2, 1999, is part of UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The Importance of Preserving Natural Areas
Pink pelicans, which weigh approximately 10–12 kg and have a wingspan of up to 2 meters, play a vital role in the regional ecosystem. The discovery of this flock underscores the critical importance of protecting natural territories and preserving biodiversity for future generations. As Ivan Rusev noted:
“this territory has a nature conservation status” - Ivan Rusev
This statement points to the necessity of maintaining the ecological balance in this location.
It is also important to note that the problem of litter in the floodplain of the Kogilnik River remains a pressing issue, and its resolution is essential for preserving the natural habitats of pelicans and other species. The discovery of pink pelicans in Ukraine opens new opportunities for research and for raising public awareness about the importance of environmental protection.
The sighting indicates an improvement in conditions for conserving rare species within their natural habitats. This event can contribute not only to the advancement of ornithological studies but also to increasing environmental consciousness among the public, which is extremely important in the face of modern ecological challenges. Preserving biodiversity and ecosystems is a key factor in maintaining the natural balance of the region, which in turn will affect the quality of life for generations to come.
