Ukraine's New Basic Social Assistance Pilot Project

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine has initiated a pilot project to provide basic social assistance to low-income families, with payments set at 4,500 hryvnias per person. The Ministry of Social Policy is implementing this initiative to support the nation's most vulnerable citizens. This program is part of broader efforts to strengthen the social safety net during a period of significant economic strain.

Eligibility and Payment Details

The basic social assistance is granted for an initial six-month period and can be automatically extended for up to two years. Eligibility extends to citizens and families already receiving low-income family assistance or single-mother child benefits. Applications can be submitted online via the 'Diia' app or in person at a service center of the Pension Fund of Ukraine.

The payment amount is calculated based on a family's average income over the three months preceding the application. A key condition excludes payments if able-bodied adults have been unemployed, not in education, not in military service, and not registered with an employment center for over three months. The project aims to provide targeted support to those most in need and improve the financial stability of Ukraine's low-income households.

This pilot project represents a significant step in the Ukrainian government's strategy to enhance social protection for its citizens. If successful, the temporary initiative could be scaled into a permanent national support program, potentially reducing poverty levels and improving living standards for vulnerable groups across the country.
