Destruction of a Mesh Network in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: In February 2026, Ukraine successfully neutralized a Russian-operated Mesh network that had been used to guide kamikaze drones launched from Belarusian territory. This operation marked a significant step in strengthening Kyiv's defensive capabilities. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed that these actions contributed to a reduction in the threat posed by drones, specifically the 'Shahed' model. This type of network is a key component in modern electronic warfare, allowing for resilient, decentralized communication.

The destroyed Mesh network was instrumental in controlling 'Shahed' drones. Its communication nodes were mounted on towers ranging from 70 to 90 meters in height. A critical feature of this setup was that one node could reach Kyiv with its signal, while another facilitated 'Shahed' attacks on western Ukraine, targeting infrastructure such as the Kyiv-Kovel railway line.

The Critical Role of Communications Control

Serhiy 'Flash' Beskrestnov, an advisor to the head of the Defense Ministry, explained that under this scheme, all airborne 'Shahed' drones were linked to each other via radio. He also emphasized that

“the operation of these nodes from Belarusian territory came as a surprise,”
as activities originating from Russia or occupied territories were more expected. Beskrestnov added:
“Naturally, we did not remain silent observers of this process of managing Shaheds from Belarus.”

Consequently, the elimination of the Mesh network became a vital element in Ukraine's fight against threats emanating from neighboring countries, particularly Belarus. Under the leadership of its self-proclaimed leader, Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus continues to support Russia's aggressive actions. This incident underscores the growing importance of targeting an adversary's command-and-control infrastructure to degrade its combat effectiveness.

This event highlights the crucial importance of controlling the informational and communication networks that an enemy utilizes for warfare. Destroying the Mesh network can significantly reduce the operational impact of kamikaze drones that threaten civilian sites in Ukraine, while also demonstrating the readiness of Ukrainian forces for proactive security measures. As Belarus remains a key node in Russian military operations, such counter-network operations are likely part of Ukraine's broader strategy to defend against external threats.
