Six Ukrainians Held in India Without Consular Support

According to TSN.ua: Six Ukrainian nationals are currently in custody in India and have yet to receive any consular assistance. The Ukrainian Embassy in India has formally demanded that its consuls be granted access to the detainees, submitting an official note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs on March 18.

A court hearing concerning the detained Ukrainians took place on March 16, during which the judge ordered their continued detention until March 27. The individuals are believed to have crossed the border into Myanmar on March 13. They face accusations related to the alleged training of militants.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 'Contrary to established international practice, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of India has not received an official notification from India’s competent authorities regarding the detention of Ukrainian citizens.'

In response, the press service of Ukraine’s MFA stated: 'Today, March 18, the Ukrainian Embassy in India once again submitted an official note to India’s MFA, demanding immediate and unimpeded consular access to the citizens.'

Tensions Rise Amid Diplomatic Strain

The situation remains tense, with Ukrainian diplomats now focused on safeguarding the legal rights of the detained individuals.

This incident underscores the critical role of international diplomacy and consular protection for citizens facing difficulties abroad. While the Ukrainian Embassy is actively working to defend its nationals, the lack of official communication from Indian authorities could hinder resolution efforts. The outcome of this case may also shape future diplomatic ties between Ukraine and India.
