MPs criticized the criminalization of illegal border crossing: details.
Expressions of opinions regarding responsibility for illegal border crossing
According to inkorr.com: Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence Fedir Venislavskyi expressed his opinion on the strengthening of responsibility for illegal border crossing. He emphasized that such changes may not necessarily reduce the number of violations. According to him, new legislative initiatives may only complicate the process of holding individuals accountable and raise questions about convictions for such actions.
“Strengthening responsibility rarely leads to a decrease in the number of offenses,” Venislavskyi stressed.
Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Law Enforcement Activities Oleksandr Bakumov also expressed his opposition to this initiative, calling it too radical. He noted that the criminalization of illegal border crossing could be too categorical, as it is necessary to consider the individual level of social danger in each specific case.
“I do not think this will be effective. Criminalization of illegal border crossing is too much,” Bakumov summarized.
It is worth noting that the government submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada aimed at strengthening responsibility for violations during border crossing. This document was submitted for consideration at the beginning of September and provides for criminal liability for illegal exit from the country, as well as for violations of the terms of stay of citizens abroad. The draft law also establishes special rules for border crossing for women MPs and men of conscription age.
In the context of modern challenges, including military and socio-economic ones, the issue of responsibility for illegal border crossing is becoming increasingly relevant. Discussions around this topic indicate the complexity of balancing security and human rights, which requires deep analysis and a thoughtful approach from lawmakers.
