Ukraine Boosts Electricity Imports to Protect Household Supply.
Ukraine Ramps Up Power Imports
According to TSN.ua: To reduce strain on its national grid during freezing weather and Russian attacks, the Ukrainian government has decided to increase electricity imports. First Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this measure via Telegram. Data shows that a record daily import of 41,987 GWh was registered in January, marking the highest level seen so far in 2025. This move comes as Ukraine's energy infrastructure faces sustained pressure from both combat operations and seasonal demand.
Denys Shmyhal explained that boosting imports will free up a portion of domestic power generation for household consumers. He also emphasized that the energy system has managed to maintain balance under difficult conditions. Repair crews are currently working around the clock to restore electricity supply, while the government is inspecting gas-fired power capacities and identifying new locations for equipment placement.
"People should not have to pay for services they did not actually receive," - Denys Shmyhal.
The Goal of the Government's Decision
This government decision aims to improve the situation in the energy sector and ensure a stable electricity supply amidst the challenges facing the country.
Increasing electricity imports is a crucial step for maintaining the stability of Ukraine's energy system during winter frosts and armed attacks. The measure is designed to lessen the load on domestic generation, which will allow for more effective power provision to consumers. With the energy sector remaining under severe strain, the government continues to implement steps to improve supply conditions and prepare for potential future challenges.
