Usyk commented on the incident with detention in Krakow for the first time.
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk commented on his detention at Krakow Airport, saying it was a misunderstanding. He also expressed gratitude to Polish law enforcement officers and Ukrainian diplomats for their support.
"And respect to the Polish law enforcement officers who perform their duties regardless of height, weight, arm span, and regalia," Usyk wrote on his Instagram.
Usyk's team also commented on the situation. Promoter Oleksandr Krasyuk stated that everything is fine and no one was arrested. Team director Serhii Lapin added that the customs control service neglected their duties.
Earlier, Member of Parliament Zhan Beleniuk reported on Usyk's detention and published a video of the incident. He also said that everything would be fine and Usyk would soon be released.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky personally called Usyk during his detention and showed his outrage over the treatment of the Ukrainian champion. He ordered the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Internal Affairs to look into the details of the incident.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also actively reacted to the situation. The Consul General of Ukraine in Krakow went to the airport to determine the circumstances. MFA spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi emphasized the unacceptability of such treatment of a Ukrainian citizen and champion.
Oleksandr Usyk's wife, Kateryna, stated that the situation is not criminal and urged not to worry.
It is worth noting that in May, Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the 21st century.
Currently, there is no official information from the Polish side regarding the reasons for the detention.
