Ukraine Imposes Restrictions on Crayfish Harvesting

According to Novyny.live: A ban on catching crayfish will take effect across Ukraine starting December 15, 2025, for major reservoirs, and will remain in place until June 30, 2026. For all other water bodies, the prohibition begins earlier, on December 1, 2025, and also ends on June 30, 2026. These measures aim to protect crayfish populations and preserve the ecological balance of Ukraine's aquatic environments. This seasonal closure is part of broader conservation efforts to ensure sustainable fisheries.

New Crayfish Fishing Rules Effective July 2026

Once the ban lifts in July 2026, crayfish fishing will be permitted but with strict limits. Specifically, an individual may catch:

  • Up to 30 crayfish in standard public waters;
  • Up to 50 crayfish in licensed paid fishing areas.

To protect juvenile crayfish, minimum size requirements are enforced: at least 9 cm for the Danube River and adjacent areas, and at least 10 cm for most other water bodies across the country.

It is also critical to note that the noble crayfish (broad-fingered crayfish) is listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species, making it illegal to harvest at any time of year. Violators face substantial penalties. The fine for each illegally caught crayfish is set at 3,332 Ukrainian hryvnias.

River crayfish are not only a valuable food source but also a vital component of the ecosystem.

These newly implemented fishing restrictions are part of a larger strategy to safeguard aquatic ecosystems and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in Ukraine. By temporarily halting crayfish harvesting, authorities aim to allow populations to recover, which in turn helps maintain ecological stability in the country's waters. Adhering to these regulations not only protects Red Book species but also raises public awareness about the importance of responsible resource management.
