Kyiv Metro Fare May Rise to 16 UAH: What Passengers Should Know.
Proposed Fare Increase for Kyiv Metro
According to TSN.ua: Oleksandr Serhiienko, head of the NGO 'Institute of the City,' has suggested raising the Kyiv metro ticket price to 16 hryvnias. This proposal stems from rising transportation costs. According to Serhiienko, the actual cost per ride in the capital's subway is approximately 45 hryvnias.
For context, the cost per trip on surface transit is 23 hryvnias. Serhiienko argues that fares need to be increased 'by half or even double' to offset growing operational expenses. He also stressed that
“it is crucial to engage with the public and clearly explain why these adjustments are necessary”- Oleksandr Serhiienko.
Private Minibus Fares Already Adjusted
Separately, private minibus operators have already raised their prices. Since March 14, fares increased by 5 hryvnias, bringing the cost of a single ride to 20 hryvnias. These changes reflect a broader upward trend in transportation costs across the capital.
The proposed metro fare hike mirrors Ukraine's wider economic challenges, including higher energy and vehicle maintenance costs. While public transport tariff changes may spark discontent among residents, experts view them as a necessary measure to ensure the financial stability of transit operators. Clear communication about the reasons behind the price increases could help mitigate backlash and foster greater understanding among commuters.
