After Losing Both Legs in Bakhmut, Veteran Almas Now Aids Fellow Wounded Soldiers.
The Story of Almas
According to UATV: War veteran Almas suffered the loss of both his legs during combat in Ukraine, yet his spirit remained unbroken. Following numerous surgeries and extensive rehabilitation, he now actively supports other wounded service members. Almas volunteered on the second day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and served as an infantryman with the 93rd 'Kholodnyi Yar' Brigade. His service ended tragically in January 2023 when he sustained severe injuries in the battle for Bakhmut, a city that became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance during some of the war's fiercest fighting.
During his treatment, Almas underwent 18 surgeries, which helped him adapt to his new life circumstances. He recounts the moment he was wounded: 'There was a five-story building, and at that moment the first RPG flew past, but the second one hit my legs directly. I felt everything—I couldn't stand up.' This harrowing experience did not defeat him, and he continues to support others.
Everything will be fine. I myself lay here. In this tent. Two years ago. They brought me here from Bakhmut, and from here I went to Kyiv, Lviv, Truskavets, everywhere.

An Active Role in Veteran Support
In 2024, he was invited to become an ambassador for the veteran support project 'TytanyUA' (TitansUA), highlighting his active role in the community and his readiness to help others. As Anton Kol notes, 'Through support, we build a new person. Despite having already endured all those fears and horrors. That is, a person is indestructible. And every Ukrainian soldier is indestructible because we all support each other.'
Almas stands as an example of resilience and courage, continuing to fight for others even after his own profound hardships. His story inspires and demonstrates the critical importance of mutual support during difficult times.
Almas's story reflects not only a personal struggle but also the broader context of veteran support in Ukraine. As many service members grapple with the aftermath of combat, inspirational examples like his are vital for motivation. Projects like 'TytanyUA' help not only to reintegrate veterans into society but also underscore the importance of solidarity between military and civilian populations. As an active participant in such initiatives, Almas demonstrates that even after devastating loss, one can find the strength to aid others—a crucial element in the nation's post-war recovery.
