Pension Reforms and Veteran Support on the Horizon
Starting March 1, 2026, Ukraine plans to raise minimum pensions for people with disabilities. Under the new rates, individuals in disability Group I would receive a minimum of 18,885 hryvnias, Group II would get 15,494 hryvnias, and Group III would be entitled to 10,625 hryvnias. Additionally, the minimum payout for combat veterans has increased to 6,197 hryvnias. These adjustments could improve the financial outlook for veterans like Budko.
It is also worth noting that Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has launched a pilot program guaranteeing contract soldiers at least 30,000 hryvnias per month for a two-year term. Such initiatives represent meaningful steps toward supporting military personnel and veterans who need extra financial resources. Like many veterans, Budko is actively seeking ways to secure a stable income despite the ongoing challenges.
Financial instability remains a pressing issue for war veterans in Ukraine, especially amid rising living costs. While the planned increases to disability and combat-veteran pensions offer hope, they have not yet taken effect. In the meantime, veterans such as Oleksandr Budko continue to face significant hardships, underscoring the need for more proactive government measures.
