Scientists Identify the Key Habit of Longevity: Sleep Proves More Important Than Diet

According to ТСН: A new large study, the results of which were published in the journal Sleep Advances, forces us to rethink our ideas about what most impacts lifespan. It turns out that the amount of nighttime sleep has a significantly greater impact on longevity than we usually thought.

Sleep as a Key Factor for Longevity

An analysis of data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2019 to 2025 revealed surprising results. The impact of sleep duration on lifespan turned out to be more significant than such factors as:

  • Quality of nutrition and diets;

  • Level of physical activity;

  • Social isolation.

The only factor that has an even more destructive impact on the body than lack of sleep is smoking. Study author Andrew McGill noted that even for specialists, the strength of the link between adequate sleep and lifespan was a surprise.

How Much Sleep Is Needed to Live Long

Researchers from the University of Health and Science Oregon found that regular sleep lasting less than seven hours per day is a critical threshold that may shorten lifespan.

Researchers explain that sleep is not a luxury that can be postponed to the weekends, but a vital necessity for heart health, immune system, and brain. Regular sleep deprivation (less than 7 hours) can lead to cardiovascular diseases and increase overall mortality risk. The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that adults adhere to the gold standard: seven to nine hours of sleep every night.

Scale of the Study and Hidden Dangers

To confirm these findings, scientists analyzed data from over 172,000 adult Americans. During four years of observations, over eight thousand deaths were recorded, a third of which were caused by cardiovascular diseases, and a quarter by cancer. Scientists concluded that approximately 8% of deaths from any cause can be explained by poor sleep patterns.

Co-author of the study, Dr. Frank Qian from Harvard Medical School, emphasizes that simply "accumulating" hours is not enough. To achieve true longevity, sleep must be high-quality and restful.

Five Golden Habits of Quality Sleep

Previous studies, including those conducted by Harvard Medical School, complement the picture. Scientists found that men who maintain an adequate sleep routine live on average 4.7 years longer, while women live 2.4 years longer. To achieve these results, one must follow five rules:

  1. Sleep consistently for 7–8 hours each night.

  2. Have trouble falling asleep no more than twice a week.

  3. Avoid interrupted sleep (not waking up in the middle of the night more than twice a week).

  4. Do not use sleeping pills.

  5. Feel refreshed upon waking for at least five days a week.

Why You Should Start Today

Scientists emphasize that health-related habits have a cumulative effect. This is particularly important for young people, as the state of the body in maturity directly depends on sleep patterns in younger years. However, as Dr. Qian notes, it is never too late to improve the situation. Sleep should become as important a topic for discussion with your doctor as cholesterol levels or blood pressure.
