Ukrainian Military Personnel with Advanced Degrees to Receive Pay Supplements.
Pay Supplements for Military Personnel with Academic Degrees
According to Novyny.live: Members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who hold advanced academic degrees are now eligible for special pay supplements. This initiative is designed to encourage military personnel who combine their service with scientific research, recognizing that their work can be vital for enhancing the nation's defense capabilities. This policy reflects a growing global trend of integrating specialized academic expertise into modern military strategy.
Supplement Amounts
The supplements for academic degrees are divided into one-time and monthly payments. Specifically, a Candidate of Sciences degree (equivalent to a Doctor of Philosophy or PhD) entitles the holder to a 5% supplement of their official salary, while a Doctor of Sciences degree commands a 10% supplement.
“Military personnel who hold an academic degree are entitled to receive an additional monthly monetary allowance in the form of supplements.” – Ministry of Defence of Ukraine
Importantly, these supplements are available to service members regardless of whether they are mobilized or serving under contract. The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine further clarifies:
“Military personnel who hold a Doctor of Philosophy (Candidate of Sciences) or Doctor of Sciences degree receive a monthly supplement for their academic degree in the relevant specialty, calculated as a percentage of their official salary.” – Ministry of Defence of Ukraine
If a service member holds two academic degrees, the supplement is calculated based on the higher of the two. This decision underscores the importance of scientific activity within the military and its contribution to the development of Ukraine's Armed Forces.
The introduction of these pay supplements could be a significant step in stimulating the intellectual potential of the Ukrainian military. It may also help strengthen the link between science and the defense sector, which could positively influence innovation in national defense and security. In the face of contemporary challenges and threats, the integration of scientific knowledge into military affairs is becoming increasingly critical.
