Nazar Daletskyi's Return from Captivity

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian soldier Nazar Daletskyi returned from Russian captivity in early February 2023, only to discover he had been officially listed as killed in action since September 2022. His homecoming was a profound shock to his family, particularly his mother, who was already ill and endured immense stress upon receiving the initial news. Daletskyi recounted the emotional impact:

'It was such a blow to me. But I was most worried about my mother, about the stress she went through and the fact she was sick at the time.'

The Identification Error

After his return, Daletskyi questioned his mother about why she believed he was dead, as he had never said goodbye. This case highlights the severe consequences of a critical error in identifying military personnel, a process fraught with difficulty during active warfare. He asked her:

'I said to my mother after I returned: why did you believe I had died?'

On February 11, 2023, an exhumation was conducted in the village of Velykyi Doroshiv, Lviv region, of remains previously identified through DNA analysis as belonging to Nazar Daletskyi. He had been buried in 2023 following this misidentification. The incident has caused public alarm and raised serious questions about the competence of the officials involved.

Member of Parliament Oleksandr Kachura has stated his intention to hold those responsible for the mistake accountable, declaring: 'This issue is not his alone. It is a question for the bureaucratic system. The guilty must be punished.' Furthermore, while Daletskyi's family is technically obligated to return state compensation paid for a soldier's death, the Ministry of Defence has indicated it does not intend to force the family to repay the funds. This situation leaves many questions unanswered regarding accountability and the procedures of state bodies in such sensitive cases.

The case of Nazar Daletskyi underscores the vital importance of accurate identification, especially in military conflicts where lives depend on the reliability of state institutions. Such errors not only inflict deep emotional trauma on families but also erode public trust in the systems responsible for these solemn duties. It is crucial that measures are taken to prevent similar tragedies and that responsible parties are held accountable to restore confidence in the process.
