Polish Police Launch Probe After Warsaw Taxi Driver Assaults Pregnant Ukrainian Woman with Pepper Spray.
Assault in Warsaw
According to TSN.ua: A taxi driver in central Warsaw used pepper spray on a pregnant Ukrainian woman, Anastasiia, and her husband after they blocked the road. The victim, who has lived in Poland for a decade and is five months pregnant, was subjected to the driver's aggressive behavior.
The driver discharged the irritant from a large canister, causing panic and distress. In response, Polish authorities have initiated criminal proceedings under Article 257 of the country's penal code, which covers hooliganism and carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years.
During the altercation, the driver expressed hostility towards Ukrainians, telling the couple they should 'go back to Ukraine.' He also verbally abused the woman, calling her a 'whore.' This incident adds to a documented pattern of rising anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland, as tracked by the Centre for Monitoring Racist and Xenophobic Behaviour.
Ukrainian Community's Response
The attack has alarmed the Ukrainian community in Poland, which increasingly faces similar discrimination and violence. Advocacy organizations are calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment for those responsible.
The event highlights growing tensions in Polish-Ukrainian relations, occurring against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the presence of a large number of Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Such manifestations of prejudice and aggression threaten social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, causing concern not only among Ukrainians but within wider Polish society.
It is crucial for Polish authorities to respond decisively to such cases, ensuring the protection of all residents' rights regardless of nationality. This incident underscores the challenges of integration even in a country that has been a major refuge for Ukrainians fleeing conflict.
