Epiphany Celebrations in Odesa

According to Novyny.live: Residents of Odesa marked the Orthodox Christian feast of Epiphany on January 19th by plunging into the freezing sea, a tradition observed despite the bitter cold. For many, this annual winter swim is more than a religious rite; it's also seen as a way to boost the immune system. The practice of taking an icy dip on this day remains a popular and enduring custom in the city.

The Winter Swimmers' Experience

Many locals are seasoned participants in this frosty tradition. One swimmer, Dmytro, has been practicing for over a decade. He noted he came to this year's event after previously missing it due to a lack of time. Another Dmytro shared his personal motivation:

"I first took the plunge because I suffered terribly from chronic bronchitis. Now, after about seven years of this, I've completely forgotten about the illness." - Dmytro

Among the participants was Renata, who has been swimming for eight years. She said, "This year I've already celebrated two holidays, and today I came just for the company."

Serhii, another enthusiast of winter bathing, expressed his view: "We swim often, so today is just a normal, active day for us."

Olena, who also took part, noted that the winter swim is a challenge to one's fears, but found this year particularly harsh: "It was truly cold today; last year it was much easier to get in."

Yaroslav, who took his second-ever sea plunge since his teenage years, admitted: "I decided to come because it's the holiday, even though the last time I did this was when I was 12."

Thus, the Epiphany celebration in Odesa served as a vibrant event that brought together people upholding tradition and viewing winter swimming as a vital part of their lifestyle and health. Despite the cold, Odesa's residents gladly immersed themselves in the icy water, continuing this long-standing practice.

Epiphany is a significant part of Ukrainian cultural heritage, symbolizing purification and renewal. This tradition attracts not only the religiously devout but also those seeking to improve their health and strengthen their immunity. The willingness to participate in freezing swims speaks to the resilience and dedication of Odesa's citizens to their customs, making the holiday special for many. Given the popularity of winter bathing, this tradition is likely to endure and attract new generations of participants.
