Under Fire in Kherson: Volunteer Andrii Petukhov's Perilous Evacuation Missions.
Braving Shelling and Drones: The Volunteer Evacuating Kherson's 'Red Zones'
According to TSN.ua: Andrii Petukhov, a volunteer from Kherson known by the call sign 'Boxer', risks his life to evacuate civilians from the region's most hazardous areas, the so-called 'red zones'. He coordinates closely with Ukrainian military and police units to secure safe passage for those trapped in these dangerous territories. The Kherson region, partially occupied by Russian forces, has been a focal point of intense fighting since Ukraine's liberation of Kherson city in November 2022.
Petukhov identifies enemy drones as the most significant threat in Kherson Oblast. He notes the frequent use of 'Lancet' type kamikaze drones, which often patrol the skies above evacuation routes. In his comments, Petukhov stresses that even an armored vehicle does not guarantee safety against such modern threats.
Furthermore, the extensive mining of roads presents a grave danger to volunteers and evacuees alike. Petukhov recounts how, at the start of his work, he was terrified of coming under tank or mortar fire. However, the nature of the threat has now evolved.
'When I first started, I was very afraid of getting caught in shelling, under a tank, under a mortar. Now it's the war of drones.' - Andrii Petukhov
Petukhov also shares the harrowing reality of his missions: 'I evacuate people and, unfortunately, also those who are no longer alive.' These words underscore the severe and tragic circumstances volunteers face on the front lines. Despite the immense risks, he continues his mission to rescue people from perilous conditions.
Evacuations from Kherson's 'red zones' remain a complex and dangerous process. Yet, thanks to individuals like Andrii Petukhov, many civilians are given a chance at survival in an environment of constant threat.
The work of volunteers in Kherson Oblast, exemplified by Petukhov, highlights the critical importance of humanitarian efforts during armed conflict. Evacuating people from dangerous territories not only saves lives but provides essential support to those in the most dire situations. Under the constant menace of shelling and mines, volunteers become key figures in preserving human life, drawing public attention to the vital need for supporting humanitarian initiatives in wartime.
